In order to understand these facts you have got to know that an atom is not only an atom but consists of an atomic nucleus and a cover around this atomic nucleus. And even the atomic nucleus consists of different parts of itself again! Imagine, there are:

•         the protons, which are charged positively and the and

•         the neutrons, which have no charge of their own.

Carbon 12 for instance has 6 protons and 6 neutrons. It got it’s name because it consists of 12 parts on the whole:

6 protons + 6 neutrons = 12 parts. 

Carbon 12 therefore is completely solid (it does not change at all).
